Xmas 2009
Xmas 2009
December Newsletter
WOW, what a massive year. I really can’t believe we are at the end of 2009!
I feel as I’ve had a lifetime of events happen in one short year.
Monumental moment for me was the birth of my son Javier who brings me joy everyday and is now bopping along to all kinds of music, mum and dad are very happy he is musical and on the beat too for a 7month old!!
2009 was also the birth of several projects that I would like to continue into 2010, the first was Bellydance Odyssey, which brought together the creme de la creme of Oriental dance represented by interstate stars such as Rose (WA), Melissa Cristina (Melbourne), Phynia (WA) and Wollongong dancer Ferah, along with our local stars such as Zlinky and the Hathor dancrers. I felt this show was a fabulous representation of what professional Oriental dance looks like onstage and for me that is very very important, taking our dance to the next level.
As artists we need to evolve and Bellydance Odyssey was a great example of the evolution of Oriental and Tribal bellydance.
I would like to see Bellydance Odyssey part II take shape in 2010 with perhaps a possible tour to areas where they don’t get to see such a caliber of artists in one place. I’m already planning!!
2009 saw also the birth of Australian Dance Festival held at Homebush Sports Stadium and featured celebrity choreographers in all fields of dance. I represented Oriental Bellydance with a workshop and performance with Hathor Dance Theatre and my interstate stars.
From this I was invited as choreographer for the World Masters Games Opening Ceremony at ANZ Stadium. This was a tremendous honour as the event management team had been searching online for a Bellydance company to represent the style. Myself and Hathor Dance Theatre as well as invited dancers performed for a mammoth crowd of 40,000 people. This was an Australian first, so it was a huge honour to be recognized for my achievement in choreography.
For those of you who know me well, know that I never sit still for too long and was busy during my pregnancy filming Volume II DVD Bellydance Bubs - A Bellydance Journey through Pregnancy. I was busy not just filming a technique session but also a documentary which I’ve titled “Mums the Word” Conversations with Bellydance Mums. I could not be prouder of this DVD as it looks amazing, the quality of sound and images are spectacular and it revolves around the most amazing experience of my life, so to me this DVD is my second baby. It is available now but the official launch is on Sunday December 20th.
We have to end the year with a big bang and what better way to celebrate an exhaustingly fabulous year than with a big dance show. El Mirage on Dec 20th brings together Australia’s pioneers of Tribal Style Bellydance, Ghawazi Caravan and Oriental dancers from the Hathor Dance Studio. A Sydney exclusive where two stylistically different companies come together and unite in dance. A show not to be missed. Tickets are still on sale through the Sidetrack Theatre Box Office.
I look forward to seeing what 2010 brings. I’m excited with all the plans I have already swirling around in my head and one of the first ones in February where Peta Jones from Silk Bazaar and I will join forces to produce a fundraiser for ESMA - Egypt Society for Mercy of Animals. A very worthy cause to help raise funds and awareness of the treatment of animals in Egypt.
I thank everyone who has made this year a huge success both personally and professionally. Thank you for attending my classes, workshops, shows, reading the newsletters and keeping up to date with Hathor Dance Studio.
I wish you all a very Merry Xmas and Safe and Happy New Year!!
Jrisi and Javier xx

SYDNEY RESTAURANTS
Finally I have created an easy to navigate page dedicated to Sydney Restaurants featuring Bellydancers and Arabic/Persian/Turkish Entertainment.
After many hours spent giving recommendations to friends, family and clients I have decided to create a page where you have a large selection of restaurants categorized by suburbs.
I have collected over 30 restaurants so far so it has been a big task putting this together along with a photograph and promo link of each dancer performing there.
My aim is to include restaurants Australia wide, so if you are a bellydancer who performs regularly in restaurants please do email me and leave your info

SHORT & SWEET INTERVIEW
WITH CAROLINE FROM CAIRO
From Nayima Hassan - Adelaide
Q: How is the camaraderie from one professional dancer to another in Cairo in comparison to Australia?
A: I can really only speak for myself and I tend to get along with a lot of the dancers in Cairo both foreigners and Egyptians- some are close friends.
From Melissa Cristina - Melbourne
Q: I am curious to know what keeps her in Egypt? To me, from my experiences there, it is a place where women are not treated equally and to be a dancer is still not the most respectable thing to do. I love Egypt too, but am always so happy to come home. So, besides the music and the chance to " be a Bellydancer", Why choose Egypt over beautiful, clean, free living Australia, You can still dance in Australia?
A: Yes I can still dance in Australia but I’m afraid it’s just not the same experience. However everyone is on his or her own journey and for me I need to be in Egypt, there are still things I want to learn more about, for example I plan to go to Aswan soon to study more about Nubian dance.
As for respect I have also had Australian dancers complaining about the lack of respect in Australia so it’s all relative I think. Also being a foreign woman I am not treated the same as an Egyptian woman most of the time. Yes Egypt may not seem the ideal place to live if you just think about Cairo – but there’s so much more to Egypt. I love Sinai especially Dahab on the beautiful Red Sea, then there’s the White Desert, Siwa, Alexandria, Luxor etc and Egypt’s proximity to Europe- I can be in France or Greece in a few hours. Having said that I do still love Cairo, it is a fun, cosmopolitan city with something happening all the time and it is the centre of Raks Sharki for me. Also I think that once you overcome all the hurdles (work permits, language and cultural barriers etc) then life in Egypt can actually be easier than in Australia- getting cheap taxis everywhere, having a cleaner, shops open til midnight, 24 hour deliveries. Having said all that it did take many years and a lot of hard work to be in the position I am in now, I almost gave up 5 years ago and returned to Australia briefly. Now I don’t think that I can ever readjust to life in Australia, I am too used to the way of life in Egypt!
Q: My second question is; many of the dancers in Egypt seemed to have surrendered to plastic surgery ie; breast implants and botox. Do you feel pressured to do this to keep getting dance work? What do you think about this?
A: The buxom look made popular by Dina has become the expected look for a Cairo dancer this is true. I would never advise someone to get breast implants just to secure work Cairo though – it would have to be for personal reasons as well.
From Magda - Sydney
Q- Who do you think is the best teacher/choreographer in Egypt at the moment and why.
A: Best is a difficult word when it comes to the arts, as it is a matter of opinion. So I would say that Raqia Hassan is still one of the most interesting choreographers of Modern Egyptian Oriental dance in Egypt. When it comes to Reda style folkloric dance Mahmoud Reda is still the original and number one!
From Rachel Bond - Sydney
Q: What do you miss most about Egypt when you are in Australia?
A: My cats! Also of course my friends in Cairo and the ones from all over the world who descend on Cairo regularly. Then there’s my whole lifestyle and the little things- loud shaabi music blaring out from street weddings, getting fresh fruit and vegetables from donkey carts, and the general craziness of Cairo!
Q: What do you miss most about Australia when you are in Egypt?
A: Family, friends and yum cha
From Annette Berry - Sydney
Q: How does one become a dancer in Egypt? there are many steps to become a professional working dancer. Did you have to endure red tape?
A: With great difficulty! The main thing is to get a contract but in order to do that you need to find a band and/or manager and start the audition circuit (which could be in several venues) all of which you have to pay for. Then if you are lucky enough to get a contract then you have the complicated mission of getting your work permits and dance license- this is an arduous task. You can employ someone to do this for you for a fee but this doesn’t even guarantee that it will actually be done and as you have to surrender your passport- I do mine myself. It can take months, especially for the first time. In Yasmina’s documentary “Journey of Desire” I outline all the steps involved- there are many and you also have to keep following up on each phase of the process- in other words an incredible amount of red tape!
From Jrisi Jusakos - Sydney
Q: What 5 things you think a dancer, whether working abroad or in Australia, should possess?
1.Dance training to at least an advanced level
2.Professional costumes
3.Understanding of the music and culture
4.Performance skills and the ability to entertain
5.A big smile (but not for the whole show!) and sense of humour
Caroline runs a Bed and Breakfast specially for dancers traveling to Egypt.

NEW CLASS FOR 2010
BALLET FOR BELLYDANCERS
with Emma Johnson
FEB 3- MAR 24
$135
Ballet is the foundation technique of many styles of dance. From this we are able to turn gracefully, extend our lines, point our feet and know how to carry ourselves as dancers.
Great dancers from past to present such as Samia Gamal, Tahia Carioca to our modern day greats like Dina and Randa have all trained in Ballet.
Now it’s YOUR opportunity to take part in this exclusive Hathor Dance class “Ballet for Bellydancers” This course is specifically designed for Bellydancers and will look at the technique you already have and allow you to see the subtle similarities between the two genres.
Emma Johnson has studied RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) Classical Ballet for 16 years, alongside jazz, tap & contemporary. She also has a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and has spent 6 years working in London in the Royal Academy of Dance Examination Department. Presently she is working in the Dance Department of The Australia Council for the Arts.
